house Gojo
Truly unique 200m2, 150 years old traditional Machiya townhouse
Description
The semi-detached former tea pavilion has been converted into a sleeping area with the bathroom being on the lower level and the bedroom on the higher one.
As far as beddings are concerned, the tatami room next to the sitting area provides traditional Japanese futons, while the converted tearoom has a Western style double bed.
The studio area is on the second floor and enjoys its own entrance, kitchen area and bathroom. It can operate as a completely independent unit and measures around 500 Sqft (45 Sqm)
It was extensively renovated by the same team of award winning Tokyo based architects who redesigned Eikando house and will include the same level of amenities, with modern appliances, thermal insulation, anti-seismic equipment, refurbished antique materials etc... to harmoniously combine tradition and elegance with safety and comfort.
1) Main house:
1st floor: Kitchen, Dining area, Japanese Sitting area, Japanese bedroom, Bathroom, Toilet, 2 Japanese Gardens.
2nd floor: One Western style bedroom.
2) Independent Studio on the 2nd floor with kitchen/dining area and sleeping area with Western style bedding.
Our opinion
Location
Originally a tinsmith district supplying the Imperial court in ancient Japan, Suzuya-cho has retained some of its old charm with many quaint machiyas, traditional old houses, and workshops still lined up in the streets. Our garden actually faces one of the oldest fabric factories in Kyoto and if you walk to the local sento (public bath) you can admire the beautiful building holding it.
Halfway between the station and our house, you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nishi Honganji and Higashi Honganji.

Everything was wonderful, and the two separate units suited us to a certain point. The toilets were a bit small, but again, that is based on the existing size restrictions. A wonderful stay, and Saki Noguchi is amazing.
Wonderful home. Highly recommended for a group! We found it quiet, quaint, and lovely. Would definitely stay again.
Wonderful trip for my family to stay in Honganji house. Precious moment with clean, peaceful & traditional place. Highly recommend this house. Also, thanks so much for Saki help, thanks so much.
We were so delighted to stay in this house. It is immaculately cared for, perfectly clean with fresh crisp Bed & Bath Linens and all the modern conveniences you could possibly ask for whilst traveling. We were so impressed with the very high standard of craftsmanship and finish achieved in the restoration that he has carried out, working with culturally aware and respectful Architects and Craftsmen. We appreciated the very warm and cozy Heating Systems in both houses that kept us so comfortable during the rather cold Kyoto Winter temperatures ... 10/10 , just FABULOUS !!!
Dream house ! We will be back.
