house Munetada

A traditional and charming house

Description

Built in 1928 on the slope of Yoshida hill, Munetada House is at the heart of a picturesque residential area whose tranquil streets have been used as a setting by film companies. The south-facing house was completely renovated in 2013, preserving its traditional character while adding modern comfort and insulation. From the balcony, drink in hand, you can watch the day fade behind the mountains in the west. Only houses certified as traditional machiya can offer holiday rentals in this area, and Munetada House is one of the few that are licensed to do this.

Ground floor: shower room, WC (washlet) and utility area, kitchen/dining room, Japanese bedroom (two futons) with sliding windows, en-suite western-style bathroom.

First floor: Japanese living room with tokonoma and balcony, western bedroom with double-bed. Both rooms have a row of windows looking out over Kyoto.

The house is just a few metres from Yoshidayama Park and the captivating shrine buildings nestled among its trees. A short stroll will take you along shady lanes to Kurodani and Shinnyodo temples. Further on, Ginkakuji and the Philosopher's Path are 20 minutes' walk away. Take the other direction and you are soon among the bustling streets around Kyoto University.

Convenience store, post office and public bath are close by. The nearest supermarket is a 10-minute walk.
The last 50 metres of the approach are up quite a steep hill, making it unsuitable for children's buggies or those with mobility problems.

Please note: owing to its wood construction, we are obliged to make this a strictly non-smoking house.

Our opinion

The area has the charm of an earlier age when the pace of things was slower and life was lived according to the rhythms of Kyoto's seasonal festivals. This is not the vacation rental to choose if you want the buzz of city life on your doorstep, but it's perfect for an evening stroll around the wooded shrines and shady temples that give the neighbourhood its distinctive character.

House rules

This house cannot accept check ins after 8 pm. (Contact us for further information)
This is a non-smoking house. Please do not smoke in the house or garden. When smoking outdoors, we ask that you not smoke directly in front of any houses in the neighborhood.
We ask that you take the utmost care to follow the garbage rules outlined by your Travel Angel during check-in.
Please be eco-friendly: conserve energy by turning off lights and air-conditioning/heating units when not in use and when leaving for the day.
Keep the house tidy. If you have moved any furniture during your stay, please be sure it is moved back to its original location.

ATTENTION

Starting on October 1st 2018, Kyoto City will impose a municipal accommodation tax on all guests staying within the city, in order to increase the attractiveness of the City as an international tourism destination.
- The tax rate is set at 200 yen per night and per guest who pays a room charge of less than 20.000 yen per night.
- The levy rises to 500 yen for those paying between 20.000 yen to 50.000 yen and to 1.000 yen for those paying 50.000 yen or more.

The accommodation tax will be collected by your Travel Angel during the check-in.

Neighborhood much quieter than our first stay in Gion. The house is very pleasant and we leave it with regret. Japan is still wonderful!

After a little effort to climb the steps in the street, what a nice surprise to discover the house Munetada: beautiful spaces, traditional Japanese doors and a sublime view in the living room that offers a beautiful sunset. We were very good in this house, with a nice space also for the children in the bedroom downstairs. The neighborhood and the various temples are also very pleasant.
I can only recommend staying here for those stopping in Kyoto

It was magical! Everything went very well, we loved the house in Kyoto. The only problem is the insulation, it is cold in winter and it is very difficult to heat. But the scenery is total, and the neighborhood beautiful. As for Aurore, our travel angel, she was perfect and very friendly. We loved this trip my daughters and me. I absolutely want to come back. Still so much to discover. Thank you to the team.
