Japan Museums: Art Tower Mito (ATM) 水戸芸術館

The Art Tower Mito (ATM) in Mito city in Ibaraki Prefecture is a multi-media arts center and performance space incorporating a concert hall, theater and art gallery.

Art Tower Mito opened in 1990 and can be seen from all over Mito thanks to the 100 meter-tall steel tower in its grounds.

ATM Functions

The Concert Hall ATM has a resident ensemble, the Mito Chamber Orchestra (MCO), and also hosts a variety of other musical events in all genres by both Japanese and foreign musicians.

The ACM Theater also has a resident acting company and hosts dramatic performances by both professionals and amateurs. The theater space can hold an audience of over 600 people. Besides modern and classical theater productions, the ACM Theater stages rakugo and school performances.

The Contemporary Art Gallery consists of nine galleries and is focused exclusively on contemporary art. Exhibitions usually include explanatory talks of the works on show. The Contemporary Art Gallery also hosts frequent lectures on modern art.

Art Tower Castle is an approximately 15 minute walk north west from Mito Station. Mito City Museum is a five minute walk from ATM. Mito Castle and Kairakuen are two of Mito city's other main attractions.

From Tokyo Station and Ueno Station take the Joban Line to Mito (1 hour, 5 mins) on the Super Hitachi express. Local trains take over 2 hours but you don't have to pay the express supplement.

From Tsukuba take a bus from outside Tsukuba Station to Tsuchiura (about 30 minutes) and then a train to Mito which is also about 30 minutes by the Super Hitachi express or an hour by local train.
