Sweet and refreshing, umeshu is THE summertime drink in Japan. A year after its manufacture, this plum brandy invades the terraces of Japanese bars.
After harvesting the precious Japanese plum (ume), preparation of the summer drink begins.It takes some plums, sugar, rice alcohol, and a year of maceration. The manufacturing of umeshu traditionally begins in June. And the following summer, you can taste the delicious nectar on the kawayuka Kyoto terraces.
Diluted (umeshu soda), straight or with ice, umeshu owes its success to its refreshing qualities. Despite its 10% to 15% alcohol content, this is indeed a very sweet and refreshing drink!
