When temperatures rise in Tokyo, there’s nothing like a kakigori to cool down! Far more than simple shaved ice, this Japanese dessert comes in endless variations, topped with fruit, delicious syrups and more. So where can you try the best kakigori in the capital? The Japan Experience team shares its favorite spots.

This century-old institution serves kakigori made the traditional way, with ice as fine as freshly fallen snow. On the menu? Classic flavors, with rich sauces and generous portions of azuki (sweet red bean paste). We love the wooden interior, which invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

  • Our favorite: Uji Matcha Kintoki. A slightly bitter green tea syrup, perfectly complemented by sweetened azuki beans and a touch of condensed milk.

  • Our favorite: The seasonal fruit creations, which showcase the delicate craftsmanship of the house. For a first visit, go for a strawberry- or peach-based recipe when available: the fresh fruit, creams and shaved ice come together in a far more subtle combination than a simple frozen dessert.
