How to Avoid Crowded Trains in Japan?

Taking the train is one of the best ways to discover Japan. But during rush hour, some lines can become VERY crowded, especially in major cities. So how can you travel more comfortably and avoid packed trains? Japan Experience shares its tips.
Avoid Rush Hour
The easiest way to avoid crowded trains is to travel outside peak hours whenever possible. In Japan’s major cities, trains are generally busiest on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., and again between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
In Tokyo, lines serving major business districts, such as the Yamanote Line and the Chuo Line, can be particularly crowded. The same is true in Osaka, Kyoto, and Fukuoka, although crowd levels vary depending on the line.
Leaving a little earlier or waiting 30 minutes can therefore make a real difference.

Travel in the Middle of the Day
When exploring a major city, mid-morning and early afternoon are often the most comfortable times to take the train. With most commuters at work, trains tend to be less crowded than during rush hour.
It’s also a good reason to start your day by visiting somewhere close to your accommodation, then take the train to another destination after 9:30 a.m.
Keep in mind, however, that train schedules and crowd levels can vary depending on the line and the day. At weekends, commuting patterns are different, and some popular tourist destinations can actually be very busy in the middle of the day.

Avoid the Busiest Routes
Not all train lines are equally crowded. In Tokyo, lines connecting residential neighborhoods with major business districts tend to be the busiest during rush hour.
Before setting off, check Google Maps, Japan Travel by NAVITIME, or Jorudan to compare routes. A slightly longer journey can sometimes be much less crowded.
Enjoy Express Trains and Reserved Seats
Not all trains are designed the same way. For longer journeys, Shinkansen and Limited Express trains often offer reserved seating. Reserving a seat means greater comfort and avoids having to stand for the entire journey.
With a Japan Rail Pass or an eligible ticket, you can reserve a seat on many JR trains. For popular routes, booking in advance is recommended, especially during holiday periods and public holidays.
Watch Out for Holiday Periods!
Even outside rush hour, some days can be particularly busy. Trains are especially crowded during Japanese holiday periods, including Golden Week, Obon, and New Year.
Weekends and public holidays can also mean heavy crowds on lines serving popular tourist attractions. If you’re traveling during these periods, try to book long-distance journeys in advance and, whenever possible, avoid late-morning departures to popular destinations.

Opt for a Green Car on Local Trains
On some local lines, particularly around Tokyo, Green Cars offer a more comfortable alternative to regular cars. These double-decker carriages have more spacious seats and are generally less crowded. They are available on several JR lines, including the Chuo and Shonan-Shinjuku Lines.
Green Cars require an additional fee on top of the regular fare or ticket. Seats are not reserved, however, so even with a Green Car ticket, you may have to stand if all the seats are occupied.

Wheelchair-Accessible Spaces
On Japanese trains, some cars have dedicated wheelchair spaces, usually located near the doors. There are no seats in these areas, leaving extra room for standing when the train is crowded.
You can stand in these spaces when they are not in use, but you should move if a wheelchair user boards the train and needs the space. These areas can also accommodate strollers, so be mindful of passengers who may need to use them.
