For many visitors, catching a glimpse of a geisha or maiko walking through the historic streets of Kyoto is one of the highlights of a trip to Japan. Their elegant kimono, distinctive hairstyles, and graceful movements have become enduring symbols of Japanese culture.

What is a geisha?

geisha, meaning "person of the arts," is a highly trained professional entertainer who specializes in traditional Japanese performing arts and refined hospitality. In Kyoto, fully qualified geisha are known as geiko, while apprentices are called maiko. Essentially, geisha are professional entertainers.

Training typically begins at a young age and can take several years before someone becomes a fully qualified geiko. During this time, apprentices study a wide range of traditional arts and cultural practices, including traditional Japanese danceshamisen performancesinging, and tea ceremony.
