Monastic succulence
Opened over a century ago, the restaurant Hanabishi Honten, a classic of the genre, has seen many monks bringing fresh food and visitors sitting down at their tables to enjoy shojin ryori, the most common Buddhist vegetarian cuisine in Koyasan, composed solely of vegetarian and seasonal products.
Served in bowls and other small plates, the dishes melt or crunch in the mouth. Between the chairs and a few low tables where you can eat sitting on cushions, the decor is quite simple. The food is a little over-priced, but certainly tasty!
