NAGANO

In the evening, after a full day, return your car to the Nagano agency.

- Nagano City is the capital of Nagano Prefecture. It evolved as a temple town around Zenkoji, one of Japan's most popular temples. In 1998, the city hosted the Winter Olympic Games, and some former olympic facilities can still be viewed around town.

- Hundreds of Japanese macaques live in the Japanese Alps and the region of Nagano, particularly in Jigokudani Yaen Koen. This park, which is specially dedicated to these monkeys, is an opportunity for a beautiful winter walk through a forest dotted with hot springs, culminating in a meeting with these noisy primates. The park has one man-made pool around which the monkeys gather, located just a few minutes' walk from the park entrance. Visitors will likely encounter monkeys along the path on the way to the pool. The monkeys live in large social groups, and it can be very entertaining to watch their interactions.

Matsumoto is the second largest city in Nagano Prefecture. It is most famous for Matsumoto-jo, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles.

Hirayu is the oldest and largest of Okuhida's onsen towns and is said to have been discovered in the 1560s. Today the town has many ryokan, ranging in size from small family run places to large complexes. Its hot spring waters are said to be very good for the skin.

- A small town in the mountains, Takayama and its old wooden houses, craft shops, antique shops, art galleries and sake breweries retains an old world charm. Nearby Shirakawa-go was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, and is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. Gassho-zukuri means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble hands (of Buddhist monks) pressed together in prayer. The architectural style developed over many generations and is designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter.
