No more paper forms! From now on, you can prepare your entry formalities for Japan online, with Visit Japan Web. Immigration, customs, information about your stay: everything is done in advance to save time when you arrive at the airport. How do I use the application? What about digital phobics? Japan Experience explains it all!
What is Visit Japan Web?
Visit Japan Web is an online platform set up by the Japanese authorities to facilitate the arrival process in Japan.
While travelers are usually asked to fill in a paper form on the plane, indicating their personal details (name, place of accommodation, etc.) and the products to be declared at customs, Visit Japan Web enables these formalities to be handled in advance, saving time once on the ground!
How does it work?
Before departure, create an account on the platform and enter your personal details (passport, flight, stay, etc.). You can register several items in advance:
- immigration formalities
- customs declaration
- certain stay information
Once these steps have been completed, a QR code is generated. On arrival in Japan, simply present it to the kiosks or agents at the airport to speed up checks.
In practice, this speeds up immigration and reduces waiting time at the airport, especially in large cities such as Narita and Haneda.
We recommend that you check in no later than 6 hours before takeoff, and ideally no later than 10 days before.
To do this, you'll need the following documents:
- A valid e-mail address (to be used as a login each time you connect to Visit Japan Web)
- A passport
- Flight number
- Address in Japan (e.g. first accommodation)
Formalities for families
If you are traveling with minor children, it is possible to register them on the same Visit Japan Web account (up to 10 travelers). Dependent or disabled adults who are unable to complete the formalities on their own can also be added to the "family members traveling with you" section. However, each family member must have his/her own passport or equivalent immigration document.
Each family member registered on the same account also receives his or her own QR code, to be presented at airport check-in in Japan.
Customs: what to declare
After immigration comes customs clearance. All travelers are required to declare the goods they are carrying, including restricted and duty-free goods.
Here too, declarations can be made via Visit Japan Web.
Checks can be random, but it's important to declare any items subject to regulations correctly:
Food products
- Meat, charcuterie, products containing meat
- Fresh produce (fruit, vegetables)
- Dairy products in certain cases
Drugs and substances
- Certain prescription drugs (especially large quantities)
- Medicines containing controlled substances (e.g. stimulants)
- Psychotropics and drugs: strictly forbidden
Even some common medicines may be limited in quantity or require prior authorization.
Cash
- Amounts in excess of 1 million yen (or foreign currency equivalent) must be declared on arrival
- Dangerous or prohibited items
- Firearms, ammunition
- Long-bladed knives or similar objects
- Defence sprays (tear gas, etc.)
Animal or plant products
- Plants, seeds, wood
Unprocessed animal products
- Strict regulations to prevent disease and parasites
Other restrictions
- Counterfeit products (falsified brand-name products)
- Certain publications or content deemed illegal
- Commercial goods in large quantities (may be taxed)

What about digital phobics?
If you're not familiar with digital technology, don't panic. Paper forms are still available on flights to Japan.
However, this is only an emergency solution, as the Visit Japan Web system has become the solution recommended by the official authorities.
Reminder: for paper forms, please fill in the document with a black ballpoint pen, as is customary in the Japanese administration.
