Viewing the Wild Terrain of Rural Kyoto

Explore the natural landscape of Kyoto with a ride on the Sagano Scenic Railway with your JR Pass. Order your Japan Rail Pass today - available in 7, 14, and 21 day passes.

These trains runs along the Hozugawa River and provide incredible views of fall foliage in the autumn and of flowering trees, including cherry blossoms, in spring. It's important to note that these trains do not run in the winter, from December 30th to February 28th, and also do not run on Wednesdays.

Train runs once every hour from 9 am to 5 pm.

The Sagano Torokko Station is a short walk from the JR Arashiyama Sagano Station. Although this railways is not covered by a JR Pass, it's a worthwhile and inexpensive supplement to your perfect trip to Japan.

One-way tickets are 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. Buy your ticket directly at the starting point for this train, the Sagano Torokko Station, or at Kyoto Station's JR Ticket Office, or any other JR Ticket Office in the area.

Many people often buy a one-way ticket and return a different way: you can take a Hozugawa River Cruise back down to Arashiyama (a bus connects the station and the cruise's dock). You can also use your JR Pass for the return trip; the Kameoka Torokko terminus station is a short walk from Umahori JR Station, and trains from here run to Arashiyama, Nijo Station (a ten minute walk from Nijo Castle), and Kyoto Station.
