How to get from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto with the JR Pass

Taking the JR Haruka Express

The JR Haruka Limited Express is the easiest and most convenient train from KIX to Kyoto. It departs from Kansai-Airport Station, next to Terminal 1, and reaches Kyoto Station in around 75 minutes, with approximately two departures per hour.

The JR Haruka Limited Express is usually the best option for Japan Rail Pass holders. Travelers without a nationwide JR Pass may also consider:

• Kansai Area Pass: Covers the Haruka and other JR services within the Kansai region, making it a good value for shorter regional trips.
• Kansai Wide Area Pass: Offers broader JR coverage, including destinations such as Himeji, Okayama, Kinosaki Onsen, and parts of Wakayama.
• Airport limousine buses: Provide direct service to Kyoto Station and selected hotels without requiring a train transfer.

Alternatively, the Kansai Railway Pass and Kansai Thru Pass cover many private railways, subways, and buses throughout the Kansai region but cannot be used on JR trains, including the Haruka or the Shinkansen.
