An essential showcase of the Kawaii universe
Created by renowned designer Sebastian Masuda—a pioneer of eccentric kawaii style and collaborator of artist Kyary Pamyu Pamyu—the original Kawaii Monster Café (2015-2021) offered total immersion in a universe lost between psychedelic dream and amusement park. With its ostentatious decor and wildly presented food, the establishment had become a landmark attraction in Tokyo for fashion-conscious travelers and locals alike.
But it was above all for its intriguing shows, performed by the "Monster Girls," performers dressed in crazy costumes, that the place was prized. Can the 2025 version do better? That's the challenge Masuda is taking up.
What can we expect?
The cute, the glamorous, the unexpected! While the head designer has remained tight-lipped about what visitors can actually expect, he has hinted that the new café will be "a rediscovered underground amusement park, once hidden beneath Harajuku." It will be located on Takeshita Dori, in the basement of the former Harajuku Alta building (now known as Takeshita Street Square) and will cover more than 400 square meters. The exact opening date has not yet been announced.
For the time being, we know that candy-themed rides have been installed—an echo of the former café, where sweets were already a recurring DA theme. In addition, "fun interactive games" (words of the owner) will see the light of day to bring a healthy dose of " kawaii chaos." Quite a program! And, of course, the Monster Girls will be on hand to welcome visitors to Wonderland.
