The feudal festival
Do not be surprised if in a little street in Hakone you come across a samurai or a chariot carrier. These characters straight out of the past will surely swell the ranks of the Daimyo Gyoretsu parade.
Those who lead the way with gusto screaming "give way to the Lord!". Others suffer in silence under the weight of the chariots carrying protective deities, war material or for the most honorable, the Lord in question. Welcome to Daimyo Gyoretsu!The parade is held every November 3rd and commemorates the cortège that, during the Edo period (1603-1868)? accompanied the local lord when he traveled.
Throughout the year, the different areas of the town preparing costumes that are as close as possible to the historical reality. Attention to detail that makes this show a good show.
But this festival is gradually losing its historical essence. Indeed, it is not unusual to see between two chariots, amid the costumed residents, majorettes and marching bands from local schools...
The procession starts at 10 a.m. at Soun-ji Temple, the protector of the event, and has approximately two hundred participants.
