In 1994, a millennium and two centuries after the foundation of Heian-kyo 794, future Kyoto, the capital of the Japanese archipelago until 1868, Nippon was born to ASOBO festival and its cultural and artistic events throughout the city. A successful marriage between the rich heritage of the past and outdoor shows, theatrical performances of today, contemporary performances. In October for two days, between tradition and innovation, Kyoto lights up with a thousand lights exalting its heritage, in the streets, gardens, Tôji, Chion-in, Shôren-in, Kodai-ji, Zenrin- temples. ji , at the Heian Jingu Palace… A myriad of sites come alive during a performance of kyogen, a form of comic theatrical expression, of dances called maï or of the delicate participation of geishas.
