Tokyo is a city that can be enjoyed at many different elevations, and these three rooftop terraces found in some of the most prominent parts of the city are a great way to take in the metropolitan atmosphere! Take a look at some of our favorite outdoor terraces in the city!
Tokyo is as metropolitan as any urban center comes, home to 14 million people with a sprawling cityscape that spans 2,194 km² (847 m²). The architecture of Tokyo is distinct, consisting of stark brutalism alongside historic wooden structures and then contemporary, elegant skyscrapers.
Throughout the many neighborhoods and areas of Tokyo, there are a number of premier rooftop terraces that are great for enjoying the outdoors and taking in the unique environments of the city. Here are a few of our favorite rooftop terraces in central Tokyo that make for a nice spot to take in the view and relax!
- Shin Marunouchi Building (7F) near Tokyo Station
- Tokyo Midtown Hibiya (6F) in Hibiya, nearby Ginza
- Tokyu Plaza Harakudo (6F-7F) in Harajuko
Shin Marunouchi Building (7F)
1 Chome-5-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda City, Tokyo
Tokyo Station is the crown jewel of the city’s wide-ranging public transportation system. Its exit on the Marunouchi area side is famous for its Taisho-era architecture that incorporates both Western and traditional Japanese aesthetics with bright crimson brickwork and ornate detailing. It is one of the most iconic views of Tokyo, both contrasting and complementing the largely contemporary skyscrapers of its surroundings.
For one of the best views of the station, right across the street is the Shin Marunouchi Building with its open-air terrace on the 7th floor! The scene of Tokyo Station across the street is cinematic, with great views of the greater plaza and even the railways behind the main building.
The terrace is open to the public and free, with a number of restaurants and cafes on the 7th floor that visitors can order from and bring out. Do be aware that outside food and drink are not allowed. The Shin Marunouchi Building is primarily a shopping mall, with quality shopping available on many of the floors below. The greater Marunouchi area consists of a lot of office buildings, so many workers in the area will stop by the terrace during lunch breaks to relax and eat.
Normally, the terrace is open up to 11 PM (23:00), however, there are occasional irregular hours for maintenance or private events.
Tokyo Midtown Hibiya (6F)
1-1-2 Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0006
Located not far from the Marunouchi area, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya is one of the city’s most illustrious shopping malls. The area of Hibiya is an upscale district that is right next to Ginza, known as one of the most luxurious districts in all of Asia, and the atmosphere is refined and elegant.
Head to the 6th floor to access their gorgeous rooftop terrace, dubbed the “Hibiya Observation Deck Park View Garden,” that tastefully combines greenery with urban, contemporary architecture. The building and terrace were all designed by the venerable Hopkins Architect Firm, inducing their masterful blend of both modern and traditional sensibilities.
Comfortable couches and seating accommodate visitors who can look out to a beautiful view of the surrounding skyscrapers, the canal of the Imperial Palace, the lively plaza below, and more! What’s more, oftentimes throughout the year, gorgeous illuminations adorn the terrace and the grounds of the mall at night! The Christmas illuminations in particular are popular.
The terrace is open from 9 AM to 11 PM daily and is located nearby both Hibiya Station and Yurakucho Station.
Tokyu Plaza Harakado (6F-7F)
6-31-21 Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo
One of the newest additions to Tokyo’s modern roster of notable structures is the Tokyu Plaza Harakado. Located at the iconic Meiji Jingumae intersection between Harajuku and Omotesando, its standout architectural features are noted by many a passerby.
It is opposite the original Tokyu Plaza Omokado, famous for its entrance made up of a collage of mirrors. Both buildings are owned by the parent Tokyu Land Corporation. Harakado finished construction in 2024 as a sister building to Omokado with similar facilities and features. From outside, however, Harakado’s most unique characteristic is its multi-leveled outdoor terrace complex with a cascading garden.
Located on the 6th and 7th floors, this terrace is free to access and offers a great view of the hustle and bustle below. At night the garden is illuminated in a way that reflects the glowing lights of the upscale Harajuku and Omotesando areas.
The terrace is open from 11 AM to 11 PM every day. Inside the mall are a number of luxury boutiques, such as the ground floor Dior flagship store, unique souvenir shops, and food and drink.
Ginza Six Garden
6-10-1 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
The Ginza Six department store is one of the crown jewels of the luxurious district’s shopping scene. Finishing construction in 2017, the contemporary-designed multi-level complex features boutiques for some of the world’s most lauded brands, like Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garçons, and more!
But it’s flocked to for more than just quality shopping! One of its biggest draws is its unique rooftop terrace that is divided into different “zones” that feature aesthetics from different kinds of biomes. There are the “grass zone,” the “water zone,” the “forest zone,” and the “promenade zone” that offer nature-influenced aesthetics in the center of Tokyo!
The Ginza Six Garden rooftop terrace is located on the 13th floor of the building and offers a view of one of the most architecturally standout neighborhoods in the city. The beautiful central intersection that features the Ginza Wako Building can be seen, as well as Tokyo Tower. The zigzagging backstreets of Ginza lattice across the ground below.
The terrace is mostly open from 7 AM to 11 PM daily with occasional irregular closures for maintenance or private events. Access is free and it makes for a great spot to kick back and relax while exploring the area!
