The "INCUBATOR" science bar in Yotsuya, in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, offers customers a unique and unusual experience, combining a scientific environment with a more traditional café-bar setting. The venue can be privatized for groups of ten or more, and is perfect for parties, conferences and other events. As you enter, you'll be immersed in an atmosphere that resembles that of a real laboratory, with flasks, beakers and even high-end lab coats on trial. The décor and furnishings are inspired by laboratory equipment, giving the place a most singular atmosphere.

2 - Tir na Nog

Tucked away in the recesses of Tokyo's Ginza district, the ornate underground bar that is Tir Na Nog, or 'Land of Youth' from Celtic mythology, transports visitors into a fairytale world. Descending the narrow staircase, customers are greeted by hundreds of butterflies and fairies hanging from the ceiling, while shelves along the walls are overflowing with small glass bottles filled with glittering fairy powder. The drinks menu resembles a fairytale book, with cocktails such as the Pink Tako - a dark, fruity concoction garnished with octopus tentacles - and the Lilly, where the drinking glass is hidden beneath a puff of blue cotton candy.

4 - Bacon

Nestled in the heart of Tokyo's Shin-Okubo district, commonly known as Koreatown, the Bacon café-bar stands out for its originality and friendly atmosphere. Owned by Jae Won Koo, heir to the local samgyeopsal (grilled pork) restaurant chain Tonchang, Bacon opened its doors in the summer of 2022, defining itself as a place dedicated to music and the arts. Its unusual name refers both to the family business on the floor below and to the painter Francis Bacon. With its neon-lit interior reminiscent of Damien Hirst's 'Pharmacy' installation and plastic furniture inspired by the transparent exhibition racks favored by the artist, the Bacon is a fascinating mix of cultural references. Its recent inauguration means that the venue remains conducive to conversation during the week, but comes alive at weekends with regular DJ events that attract enthusiastic crowds.

Venturing into Tokyo's famous dagashi bars is like discovering a time machine. Inherited from the past, these nostalgic establishments are a true tribute to the Showa era (1926-1989) and its soft, warm atmosphere. Here, the star of the show is the sweet, in all its forms and flavors. For the modest price of 500 yen, you get unlimited access for two hours to every delicacy you can imagine. From jelly sweets to chocolates, not forgetting the harder candies, everything is there to delight your taste buds. It's a chance to let your childlike soul take over, savor the moment and reminisce about a bygone era.
