Want to explore Tokyo from above? Whether on the roof of a department store, at the top of a shopping center, or over a drink at a rooftop bar, rooftops offer a chance to take a break while enjoying a different side of the capital. The Japan Experience team shares its favorite rooftop spots!
Shin-Marunouchi Building: A Terrace Overlooking Tokyo Station
Just a short walk from Tokyo Station, the Shin-Marunouchi Building offers one of the most easily accessible viewpoints in central Tokyo. Its outdoor terrace, located on the 7th floor, looks directly out onto the platforms and the station’s red-brick facade. It’s a pleasant spot to take a break after a day of sightseeing, especially since there are several cafes and restaurants in the building.
The rooftop is free to access and lets you enjoy the view without necessarily having to reserve a table. At the end of the day, the buildings in Marunouchi light up, and the terrace becomes a great starting point for continuing your evening in the neighborhood.
Our tip: Stop by the terrace before heading to Tokyo Station. The view of the station from there is very photogenic.

Tokyo Midtown Hibiya: A Break Above the City
In Hibiya, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya features an outdoor space on the 6th floor called Park View Garden. As its name suggests, the terrace overlooks Hibiya Park and the skyscrapers of downtown Tokyo.
The space is more low-key than the capital’s major tourist rooftop decks. You can head up there between sightseeing stops, settle in for a few minutes, and watch the comings and goings of the neighborhood. The complex’s restaurants and cafés also let you extend your break with a meal or a drink.

Ginza Six Garden: A Hanging Garden in the Heart of Ginza
Topping Ginza Six, Ginza’s large shopping complex, is a hidden outdoor garden. Located on the 13th floor, the Ginza Six Garden wraps around the building and offers several vantage points overlooking the neighborhood’s skyscrapers.
Here, you don’t need to sit down at a bar to enjoy the view. The garden is a great place to stroll, with green spaces and places to sit. It’s a great spot to get a bird’s-eye view after browsing the shops in Ginza. The terrace also offers a view of the neighborhood’s architecture, and on clear days, you can spot some of Tokyo’s famous landmarks.

Tokyu Plaza Harakado: A Contemporary Take on Tokyo
In Harajuku, Tokyu Plaza Harakado is one of the new spots to check out if you want to get a bird’s-eye view. The building, which opened in 2024 across from Tokyu Plaza Omotesando, features several outdoor spaces, particularly on the 6th and 7th floors.
The atmosphere is very different from that of traditional rooftop bars: here, the terrace is part of a complex dedicated to creativity and culture. From up high, you can see the rooftops of Harajuku and the hustle and bustle of Omotesando. After a stroll down Takeshita-dori or Omotesando, this is a great spot to take a break away from the crowds on the ground floor.

Meguro Sky Garden: A Park Above the Highway
For a unique experience, head to Meguro Sky Garden. This circular park was built atop a highway interchange, several meters above the ground. Once inside, however, it’s hard to imagine that you’re actually above a highway structure. The walking path is lined with greenery and offers several spots to stop and rest.
This spot isn’t a rooftop in the traditional sense, but it deserves a place on this list for its architecture and unique atmosphere. We recommend it to anyone looking to discover a more authentic side of Tokyo, away from the major observation decks.

Hacienda del Cielo: Dinner with a View of the Tokyo Skyline
In Daikanyama, Hacienda del Cielo offers a more festive experience. Located on the 9th floor of a building, this Mexican restaurant features an outdoor area with a view of the Tokyo skyline.
People come here as much for dinner as for a drink, and the atmosphere changes throughout the day: fairly quiet at the start of service, it becomes livelier in the evening. The setting makes it a great spot to combine dining with panoramic views without necessarily having to go to a hotel rooftop.
The restaurant is just a few minutes’ walk from the Daikanyama train station, making it easy to continue the evening in the Nakameguro or Ebisu neighborhoods .

The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon: A Rooftop Spot for a Drink
For a more upscale spot, head to The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon. The hotel is home to the Jade Room + Garden Terrace, a high-rise restaurant and bar with a terrace overlooking Tokyo’s skyscrapers.
The greenery surrounding the terrace contrasts with the towers of the Toranomon neighborhood. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a drink at the end of the day, when the buildings start to light up!
Please note: Since access is tied to the restaurant and bar, it’s best to make a reservation before you go.

Shibuya PARCO: Getting a Bird’s-Eye View in the Heart of Shibuya
Amid the hustle and bustle of Shibuya, Shibuya PARCO also features an elevated outdoor space. The complex’s rooftop offers a place to take a break after strolling through the neighborhood’s streets and to admire the many buildings surrounding the station.
This spot is a great place to visit at the end of the day, after spending some time in the shops and cultural spaces at PARCO, to get some fresh air.
