Maruyama Okyo, Japan's first naturalist
Famous for introducing naturalistic painting to Japan, Maruyama Ōkyo is one of the most important Japanese painters of the XVIIIᵉ century. His school profoundly inspired Kyoto painting and, more broadly, Japanese aesthetics.
What made him famous? His sense of observation and his respect for animals, which he depicted as faithfully as possible on his canvases, in contrast to the stylized representations of them by artists of the time.
His masterpieces include "Cranes in the Snow", "Tiger Rolls" and "The Specter of Oiwa" - all strikingly realistic canvases, classified as Important Japanese Treasures, which you can admire at this major exhibition.
A confidential exhibition
Unknown to travel guides, the Mitsui Memorial Museum is a small museum in Tokyo located in Nihonbashi. What makes it special? It presents the art collection of the Mitsui family, one of the country's most influential industrial families.
Housed in the Mitsui Main Building, a neo-classical edifice built in 1929, the museum is an attraction in itself. It's a refined setting, emblematic of the golden age of modern Japan, which sublimates the ceramics, prints and objets d'art it houses. In all, over 4,000 works of art are on display! Two birds with one stone, for those who come to enjoy the exhibition dedicated to Maruyama Okyo.
