The storytelling museum
As its name suggests, MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives is distinguished by an original concept: combining art and technology to share stories about Japanese culture, rather than collectibles.
Say goodbye to vases, paintings and other classical works of art, and hello to live performances, interactive installations and digital theater!
Combining exhibition rooms and breakout areas, MoN Takanawa offers a dynamic, thought-provoking visit. With two major themes per year, it invites visitors to reflect on the future. Its name was already a clue, since "MoN" means "door" and "question" in Japanese, symbolizing a dual ambition: to open up new perspectives and encourage reflection on the world and culture.

Redefining Japanese culture
Featuring both traditional practices (tea ceremony, handicrafts, etc.) as well as more recent disciplines (manga, technologies, etc.), MoN Takanawa redefines the Japanese culture of today and tomorrow.
Our favorites?
- The TATAMI, a 200-square-meter tatami-coveredspace that can accommodate both traditional performing arts and more contemporary uses, such as strolling or taking photos.
- The terrace with an ashiyu, the traditional footbath! Enjoy the view of Tokyo with your feet in the water.
- BOX1000, an LED-screen theater, with seating for up to 1,048 people and standing room for 2,000.
A complex urban project
The museum is part of a modern urban project in Takanawa Gateway City, an innovative and rapidly expanding district of Tokyo, built around the new Takanawa Gateway station on the yamanote line.
MoN Takanawa is a major cultural hub in this new area. Its architecture, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is distinguished by its wooden structure and spiral shape, symbolizing the link between tradition and innovation. The complex also offers a wide range of spaces for relaxation: gardens that change with the seasons, a library, cafés, restaurants and open areas to pass the time between events.

Supported by JR East's rail network rail network, the museum collaborates with numerous cultural institutions. Itinerant programs, regional partnerships and international collaborations enable it to extend its influence beyond the capital.
Until September 2026, these revolve around the theme ''Spiral, Spiral - Evolving Human Narratives'', exploring the shape of the spiral through art, culture and technology.
Several events around the theme ''Life as Culture'' are scheduled, including :
- Jeff Mills presents PHOENIX - Electronic Symphonica (May 17)
- KAIMoN Music Festival (May 19-22)
- MoN Variation Hall / National Treasure Live (May 23)
- Aleko Ballet (May 29 - June 7)
- MoN Kabuki Dance Performance (July 2-5)
- And soon The Future of Life 2026 (mid-July to early September), exploring the possible futures of human and robotic life.
