Summer in Kyoto is intense, vibrant, and deeply traditional. While the heat and humidity can be strong, the season rewards visitors with some of Japan’s most spectacular festivals, atmospheric evening events, and refreshing escapes into nature. From lantern-lit temples to riverside dining and mountain retreats, Kyoto in summer offers a unique balance of culture and coolness.
Experience the Gion Festival
No summer visit to Kyoto is complete without the legendary Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s most famous and historic festivals, held throughout July.
The highlights are the grand processions of elaborately decorated floats, known as yamahoko, which parade through the city center:
- July 17, 2026 (morning): main procession along Shijō Avenue
- July 24, 2026 (morning): second procession along Karasuma Street toward Yasaka Shrine
Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the festival dates back over a thousand years and reflects Kyoto’s deep connection to tradition and Shinto beliefs. In the evenings leading up to the parades, the streets come alive with food stalls, lanterns, and locals dressed in summer yukata.

Dine Along the Kamogawa River (Kawayuka)
One of Kyoto’s most iconic summer experiences is dining on a kawayuka, a raised terrace built over the Kamogawa River.
These riverside platforms allow you to enjoy dinner in a cooler microclimate, accompanied by the gentle sound of flowing water. Many restaurants serve refined Kyoto cuisine, making it both a culinary and atmospheric highlight. While often on the higher end price-wise, the setting alone makes it worthwhile.

Visit Illuminated Temples at Night
Kyoto’s temples take on a magical atmosphere during summer evenings.
At Kōdai-ji Temple, annual summer illuminations (typically held in August) light up the gardens and pathways with hundreds of lanterns in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The softly glowing scenery, combined with night visits, offers a peaceful escape from the daytime heat.
Other temples and shrines across Kyoto also host limited-time evening openings, making nighttime sightseeing one of the best ways to explore the city in summer.
Escape to the Mountains of Takao
When the city heat becomes overwhelming, head north to Takao, a forested area less than an hour from central Kyoto.
Here, temperatures are noticeably cooler, and you can:
- Walk shaded forest trails
- Follow riverside paths
- Visit historic temples such as Jingo-ji Temple
Takao is ideal for a half-day or full-day trip, offering a refreshing contrast to Kyoto’s urban summer atmosphere.
Celebrate Tanabata at Kibune Shrine
The romantic Tanabata, based on a legend of star-crossed lovers, is celebrated throughout Kyoto in July and August.
One of the most beautiful places to experience it is Kifune Shrine, located in the mountain village of Kibune. Here, bamboo branches decorated with colorful wish papers line the shrine, often illuminated in the evenings.
Visitors can write their wishes and hang them among the decorations, creating a serene and poetic atmosphere surrounded by nature.
Cool Down with Kakigōri
Kyoto summers call for kakigōri, Japan’s beloved shaved ice dessert topped with flavored syrups and seasonal ingredients.
Check out the following locations for some of the best kakigori in the city:
- Gion Koishi, known for traditional flavors near Gion
- Saryō Tsujiri, famous for matcha-based creations near Kyoto Station
From classic fruit syrups to rich matcha and condensed milk combinations, kakigōri is both refreshing and culturally iconic.

Witness the Gozan Okuribi Fires
On August 16, Kyoto hosts one of its most striking summer traditions: the Gozan Okuribi.
As part of the Obon season, large bonfires are lit on five mountains surrounding the city to guide ancestral spirits back to the afterlife. The most famous is the giant kanji character “大” (meaning “great”) burning on Mount Daimonji.
For one of the best panoramic views, head to Funaokayama Park, which offers a clear vantage point of several of the illuminated mountains.
Stroll Through Gion at Night
After the daytime heat fades, Kyoto reveals a quieter, more atmospheric side. The historic district of Gion is especially enchanting in the evening.
Lantern-lit streets, traditional wooden buildings, and the possibility of spotting a geiko or maiko make nighttime walks here one of the most memorable summer experiences in the city.
