2nd STREET: The Must-Visit Thrift Store
You can’t talk about thrift stores in Tokyo without mentioning 2nd STREET! This chain has numerous stores throughout the capital and is a great option for anyone who loves to rummage through clothes in search of bargains.
The selection varies by store, but you’ll generally find clothing for men and women, accessories, and a wide range of Japanese and international brands. Some stores focus more on streetwear or brand-name items, while others offer a more general selection.
Our favorite spot? The store in Shimokitazawa. With prices varying depending on the brand and the condition of the clothes, you can walk away with an item for just a few hundred yen—or stumble upon something much more high-end.

Prices are understandably higher than at a general thrift store, but they can be a good deal for certain designer pieces. It’s also a great place to discover Japanese brands that are hard to find in France.
The Harajuku store is a great choice for fashion enthusiasts, but Kindal also has locations in Shibuya, Shinjuku, Kichijoji, Koenji, Shimokitazawa, and several other neighborhoods in Tokyo.

To discover another side of Tokyo’s vintage scene, head to Koenji and Atlantis Vintage. This independent shop offers a selection of secondhand clothing that will appeal to fans of retro pieces. Koenji is less crowded than Harajuku or Shimokitazawa, making it a great place to combine vintage shopping with exploring a more local side of Tokyo. Atlantis Vintage is therefore a great stop for those looking for a change of pace from the more well-known spots.

You'll find clothing for men and women, as well as shoes, bags, and accessories. The layout is less “vintage boutique”-style than at a chain like Flamingo or an independent thrift store, but that’s exactly what sometimes leads to the best finds. For those on a tight budget, it’s a place to keep in mind, especially during a day out in Ueno. Note that there are many Mode Off locations throughout the city.

Our Tips for Thrift Shopping
- Take the time to browse: the best finds aren’t always visible at first glance. Some stores carry several hundred items, so you’ll need a little patience.
- Compare prices: the same type of clothing can be priced very differently depending on the store, the brand, the era, and the item’s condition.
- Keep Japanese sizes in mind: they may differ from what you’re used to in Europe. Don’t hesitate to try items on in the store if possible.
Happy shopping!
