Located in the eastern portion of Tokyo, Akihabara is famous as the center for manga and anime. While this is a major characteristic of the area, it doesn’t encapsulate the full story, in which electronics (and household appliances) marked its initial success. Nowadays, the area is a hub for culture and hobbies and is one of the most famous neighborhoods in all of Tokyo.
Tokyo’s hobby hub
The initial mention of Akihabara for most people conjures up imagery of anime and manga, and for good reason. This association is something that the culture of this eclectic district has fully embraced, serving as a mecca for fans of anything otaku-related both within Japan and overseas. Many of these establishments will be located within Electric Town, the central part of Akihabara characterized by a bustling main street lined with neon signs.
But along with this, Akihabara is a place that caters to hobbyists of all kinds. In fact, Akihabara grew to become the commercial district it is now after becoming a hot spot for black market electronics and gear after World War II. Knowing this history, it’s quite jarring to see a modern-day Akihabara with streets illuminated with colorful advertisements, neon signs, and maid cafes.
If you have an interest of any kind, really, chances are that somewhere in Akihabara will cater to you. Here are some of our favorite places to check out in the area.
