A door between two worlds

Ikebukuro station is located northwest of the Yamanote line between Meijiro and Otsuka stations. The Ikebukuro district has a lot to offer in terms of entertainment and sightseeing. The station, its exits, and its lines are therefore crucial for Tokyoites and visitors.!

The station in a nutshell...

The Yamanote Line is a circular subway line serving Tokyo's major railway stations, including Tokyo, Ueno, Shibuya, Shinagawa, and Shinjuku stations, as well as many of the city's attractions. Of these, Ikebukuro is Tokyo's main northwest station. This shopping and entertainment district is home to unique shops and indoor theme parks, many catering to anime and manga fans.

Ikebukuro Station was inaugurated in 1903, making it one of the oldest stations open to the public in metropolitan Tokyo. If in 1903 around 28,000 passengers used the station every day, today the number of passengers exceeds two million. It is mainly used by people from Saitama Prefecture and other residential areas northwest of the city center when they come to Tokyo.

Thus, the gigantic Ikebukuro station constitutes an important hub of the capital. And which lines go through Ikebukuro station? In addition to the JR Yamanote Line, there are three lines operated by the Tokyo Metro railway company: the Fukutoshin Line, the Yurakucho Line, and the Marunouchi Line.

The Fukutoshin line runs from the city of Wako, in Saitama prefecture, to the very famous district of Shibuya,
The Yurakucho line, which will allow you to go to the luxury district of Ginza,
The Marunouchi Line passes through the high-rise business districts of Shinjuku and Chiyoda.

No Shinkansen line serves Ikebukuro station directly, but it is possible to take the Yamanote line from Ikebukuro to Tokyo or Shinagawa station and arrive fairly quickly at the Japanese TGV platforms. However, you have access thereto the Narita Express, a direct train to Narita Airport.

Numerous department stores, some of which belong to the railway companies, surround the station. Including Tobu, Seibu, Loft, and Parco stores. You will find souvenirs to bring back from your trip, but also culinary specialties and clothing shops.

Ikebukuro Station has two main entrances, the East Exit, and the West Exit, in addition to the many other exits scattered around the station area. These two exits are like gateways to different worlds.

The WEST exit

By taking the west exit, a world of nightlife beckons!

You will find a multitude of izakaya, traditional Japanese bars, and restaurants of all kinds. Okonomiyaki, katsudon, curry, or even sushi, you will find everything and at all prices. There's even pachinko too if you want to try Japan's favorite game.

In front of the west exit, there is also a huge karaoke. And karaoke nights are a veritable institution in Japan. Nothing to do with those we know in the West, here you rent small rooms by the hour...

The EAST exit

By taking the east exit, you enter the world of shopping and anime and manga fans.

The Sunshine City Mall is home to a planetarium, an aquarium, and indoor theme parks, including Pacman creator's Namja Town, a museum, and the Sunshine Prince Hotel. You will also find the largest pokemon center in Japan there.
