Is it actually difficult to eat vegan in Japan? Vegan menus may not be very widespread across the archipelago, but the capital of Japan does have a few great options! To help you stick to your diet without compromising on taste, Japan Experience presents its selection of 10 vegan restaurants in Tokyo.
How difficult is it to eat vegan in Japan?
Thanks to its geographical location, Japan has a rich and diverse cuisine. Fish, seafood, shellfish, and of course, meat, eggs and dairy products, which the Japanese consume on a daily basis in a more modest way: traditional Japanese cuisine is not vegan (apart from the cuisine of Buddhist monks). Fish and shellfish can be found in soup bowls, which often contain dashi, a broth made from bonito and seaweed. Yet it's not impossible to eat vegan in Japan, especially in Tokyo, which boasts an impressive number of restaurants.
What are vegan restaurants like in Tokyo?
Metropolitan Tokyo is home to over 580,000 foreign residents, including vegan communities who began campaigning more for their cause in the 2010s. While the first establishments to offer vegan menus are relatively recent, today there are other options in the capital for those who don't eat fish or eggs. Particularly in neighborhoods popular with foreign travelers, such as Shibuya and Shinjuku. But beware! These restaurants don't always offer menus in English, and the staff aren't necessarily bilingual.
