The purity of a place, the beauty of objects
From the outside the building appears transparent. In Roppongi, in the high-end Tokyo Midtown complex, architect Kengo Kuma has created a new setting for this finely crafted collection that the elders admired in the Marunouchi District, before it moved in 1975 to Akasaka, to the Palace building.
Suntory Museum of Art was founded in 1961 on the initiative of Keizo Saji, president of the famous whiskey firm of the same name. Today, on this new site, soft lights adorn the galleries. There are sliding walls to suit the different exhibitions. Wood and washi (traditional Japanese paper) create a natural warmth. A decorative starkness magnifies the atmosphere, which matches the Japanese habitat.
The art in life
More than three thousand works of art and craft narrate everyday life in a sensitive prism . Here, some wonders through the ages are displayed, from the fifteenth century to present day. Noh theater costumes, kimonos, fabrics, hairpins and other accessories related to women's fashion, paintings, pottery and porcelain, lacquers... make up this Japanese heritage treasure.
