Want to experience onsen without spending a night in a ryokan? The Mount Fuji region abounds in higaeri onsen, hot springs accessible by the day. Selected by Japan Experience.

Created in the 1980s in Hakone by a Japanese craftsman with a passion for traditional architecture, Tenzan Tohiji-kyo captivates with its bucolic atmosphere. With its stone baths and wooden buildings, the establishment offers a timeless break for anyone wishing to enjoy hot springs in the heart of nature. We love its tatami relaxation area and low prices (entrance fee: 1,400 yen (7.50 euros)).

Worthy heir to the Hakone Yumoto springs, frequented since the Edo period (1603-1868) by travellers on the Tokaido yunosato Okada opened its doors in the 1980s. Set on a mountainside, it offers five different baths, renowned for their skin-friendly alkaline water. We love its restaurant area and panoramiconsen, with views over the Hakone countryside.

Located a stone's throw from Hakone-Yumoto station, this exceptional onsen is served by the Romance Car which runs between Tokyo in an hour and a half. This is the first establishment in the Odakyu group (which also runs the Romance Car) to offer private ryokan-style baths to day guests. Day visitors will particularly appreciate the sauna and massage salon, to round off their day.
