  • Sakanaya

〒171-0021 Tokyo, Toshima City, Nishiikebukuro, 1 Chome−35−8

A classically styled izakaya with a very impressive selection of sake from all over Japan. You’ll need to duck down to get through the door.

  • Ichiban Karaage

〒170-0013 Tokyo, Toshima City, Higashiikebukuro, 3 Chome−11−9

A bit away from the center of Ikebukuro, this modest karaage shop is a favorite in the area (and actually, “ichiban” means number one, or the best). Get one of their special servings for a filling meal.

Ikebukuro is also synonymous with Sugamo Prison, which was in use from 1895 until its demolition in 1971. The former site is now where the Sunshine 60 building is located.

As previously mentioned, Ikebukuro is heavily associated with pop culture, and in turn, many anime take place in or refer to the neighborhood. The most prominent of these is “Durarara!” that fully takes advantage of the eccentric area for its setting.
