Megalomania
The National Art Center Tokyo plays on gigantism and hosting exhibitions. Although it doesn't really have any collections, this new institution of 14 000 m², twelve rooms, prides itself on being the largest museum in Japan. So, most are rented to groups of artists.
In Roppongi, there is the Mori Art Museum, the Suntory Museum and the National Art Center Tokyo, which opened in 2007. The building, which is bright and open to the exterior, attracts many curious visitors. The architect Kisho Kurokawa (1934-2007), who in 1990 created the new wing of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, designed the building. It is characterized by a long facade covered with a wavy, glass and iron curtain, which protects it from the summer heat. Apart from the vast exhibition spaces, it is worth visiting the library to view the catalogs of art, architecture and design, many of which are in English.
The people of Tokyo come for the hanging of famous works (the Gutai movement, the Hermitage collections, Andreas Gursky in 2012-2013), and also jostle to get into the Brasserie Paul Bocuse. On this floor, when there are no clouds, Mount Fuji can be seen in the distance. Great artwork signed Mother Nature!
