Kerama Islands - The Newly Appointed National Park
On March 5th, 2014, the underwater marvels of the Kerama Islands were rewarded for their outstanding beauty.
The Kerama archipelago, consisting of a total of 30 islands - only five of which are inhabited - has recently been named by the Ministry of Environment as a national park in Japan.
This is the first designation of its kind in 27 years! After the Shitsugen Kushiro National Park in Hokkaido in 1987, no place had been submitted to the Department for review.
The impressive diversity of Kerama's coral reefs and water quality earned it the prestigious ranking.
But this title does not aim only to recognize the beauty of Kerama. Governed by specific laws, the fauna and flora of these parks enjoy special protection. The aim is to promote tourism while respecting the extraordinary landscapes.
