Kōyō in Kyoto (Autumn in Kyoto)

The Colors of Kyoto

Many believe that Kyoto is at its most beautiful when it's decorated in autumn hues, which start in early November. Japanese from all over the country come to Kyoto for their momijigari, or "red leaf hunt," every year.

Here are a few of the most famous (and, of course, most beautiful) spots that these leaf hunters flock to.

Kôyô in Kyoto

Possibly the number one spot for those stunning red leaves that Japanese Maples are famous for, Tofukuji, just southeast of Kyoto Station is not a very popular destination ten months out of the year.

When fall comes around, however, that's another story! Tofukuji is easily accessible by train: from Kyoto Station take the local JR one stop to Tofukuji Station, or the Keihan train to Tofukuji. Round out your day trip by getting back on the train (either JR or Keihan) for a few more stops south to Fushimi Inari, a must-see in Kyoto.

Kiyomizu Temple Kôyô season

Kiyomizu Temple

Kiyomizu has incredible views of Kyoto city all year round. This temple complex has many corners to explore, from the nearby "love shrine" to its waterfall with healing powers, but its most famous attraction is its stage, sloping over the hills of Higashiyama.

As you explore the Higashiyama district, with its many renowned temples and the Gion geisha district, be sure to stop on this stage to view a sea of reds, oranges, and yellows.

Tenryuji Arashiyama

Possibly as famous for fall colors as the aforementioned Tofukuji, Eikando Temple is one of the last stops as you stroll the Philosopher's Path.

The red momiji leaves (Japanese Maple leaves) will also be illuminated in the evenings during its peak, from November 8th to December 4th, 17:30 to 20:30.

Kodaiji in Kyoto

Tenryuji (Arashiyama)

The entire Arashiyama district, just west of Kyoto city, will be incredibly beautiful when the leaves change this autumn, especially its most famous temple, Tenryuji.

Walk through the temple ground's extensive garden, dotted with autumn foliage of all kinds, or sit on the temple's veranda to contemplate its beauty.
